Today, there was a reading quiz on Chapters 9-12 worth 20 points. Then, we watched another chunk of the film version of Lord of the Flies. We'll finish the movie tomorrow and students will begin preparing for the final essay on the novel.
We finished the book! Next week, I'll introduce the essay. There will be a reading quiz on Chapters 9-12 on Monday.
On Tuesday, we continued our study of symbolism in the novel while reading Chapter 10, and students worked on an assignment requiring them to explain the significance of several symbols in Lord of the Flies. This is a two-day assignment worth up to 12 points. If you were absent, please see me for a copy.
Today, we read Chapter 11 and students completed yesterday's symbol assignment. During the last few minutes of class, students watched the opening scene from the most recently made film version of the book. It's kind of neat to contrast the book to the film--two very different interpretations! At the start of class, we reviewed last Friday's discussion of "barbarism" versus "civilization." I added to these notes by explaining the novel's title--its translation and meaning. Then, we read Chapter 9 before students identified six symbols in the book and decided whether each is "civilized" or "barbaric." We'll continue this examination tomorrow.
First, we brainstormed a list of what we associate with the word "barbaric" and the same for "civilization." Then, we read most of Chapter 8.
There was a reading quiz on Chapters 6 & 7, then there was an in-class response. Please see me for a copy of the response prompts.

We've been busy keeping up with the reading schedule for Lord of the Flies. In addition to the assigned chapters to read, there is a study guide to complete, due today. There will be a vocabulary quiz today.
