At the start of class, I made a few announcements and gave students a handout with instructions on how to write a conclusion. For the remainder of the class period, students worked on their essay drafts, due by midnight tomorrow.
Goal: Understand how to write a body paragraph, including embedded quotations.
Following a mini-lesson on using quotes and writing a body paragraph, students moved to the computer lab to begin drafting their literary analysis essays. The draft of the essay is due to Turnitin by midnight on Thursday, 10/29. In class today, we finished the film version of the novel. I led a short discussion about the ending of the film versus the book. In addition, we noted other decisions made by the director and whether or not these changes supported the main themes in the novel.
Then, I gave a brief lesson on creating a thesis statement and supporting it with three main points--basically, making an essay outline. Finally, I gave students a template for an introductory paragraph; this is due tomorrow. We have been gettign started on the literary analysis essay by writing theme statements and thesis statements. Students received two handouts with clear instructions about how to do this. We've also been drinking hot chocolate and watching the film version of the novel.
Students received the overview of the literary analysis essay on Of Mice and Men. Here it is:
Then, we watched another section from the film. Tomorrow, we'll work on writing theme statements and creating a thesis statement.
There was a final reading quiz, worth 25 points. These quizzes have been graded and the scores entered in Skyward. Three students who were absent yesterday did not take this quiz and will need to take it after school this week.
Next, we made mugs of hot chocolate and watched about thirty minutes of the film version of the novel. Tomorrow, I will introduce the literary analysis essay. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday. We finished Of Mice and Men today. The book is very sad, of course, but I really appreciated the quality of discussion its conclusion prompted. Students had about fifteen minutes to complete an extended response, using evidence from the book, to one of the following prompts:
There will be a reading comprehension test tomorrow. Also, character charts and figurative language charts are due at the beginning of Tuesday's class.
Following a quick review of vocabulary words, and assignment reminders, we continued reading Of Mice and Men. We finished Chapter 5. Students had time to complete the character chart, due today. In addition, they added to the figurative language sheet.
We'll finish the book on Monday. Today, students had the class period to work in the computer lab on their interview narrative essays, due to Turnitin by midnight tonight.
A few students were in the library taking the PSAT; however, they are responsible to make up the work they missed.
In class, students took a vocabulary quiz. In addition, we finished reading Chapter Four. Finally, students took notes on the definitions of a new list of vocabulary words. Here are the words: aloof, crestfallen, fawn/fawning, indignation, sullen/sullenly, console, writhe, and belligerent/belligerently. There will be a quiz on these words next week. We'll be in the computer lab tomorrow to finish interview narrative essays, due to Turnitin by midnight tomorrow. |
